“Feet First: Becoming a Hospital Emergency Manager During the COVID Crisis”

Synopsis: Erin Valentine became a first-time hospital emergency manager on February 10 of this year. Three weeks later, they activated their incident command structure and she spent the next five months overseeing the hospital’s crisis response to COVID-19.

Erin works at a small community-based hospital in inner city Baltimore. Up to 20% of our patients have been COVID-suspected or positive. She has a hand in almost every mission, including managing surge, designing a biocontainment unit, and mortality planning.

Erin learned more during the past six months in healthcare than she did in ten years of responding to mostly natural disasters at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency. Now that things have slowed a bit, Erin can finally take a breath and reflect on what she learned so far—albeit with sweaty palms for another surge this fall.

Speaker Bio: Erin Valentine, CBCP, MBCI, is the Emergency Manager for the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus in Baltimore, MD. Erin spent the first decade of her career at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency managing the state’s response to natural and man-made disasters. In 2013, she served as an emergency preparedness consultant to the Social Security Administration. She then earned a certification as a business continuity planner and went to work for General Dynamics Information Technology as a Business Continuity and IT Disaster Recovery Coordinator. She has also independently consulted for the Johns Hopkins Hospital Office of Emergency Management. Ms. Valentine became an Emergency Manager for the University of Maryland Medical Center in February 2020 and has since been leading the hospital’s incident command in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Erin is the President of the Central Maryland Association of Continuity Professionals.
